Back story: my 1972 mercury 1150 wouldn’t rev up past 3500-3800 rpm, just bought the boat last season went out a few times and started a full restoration on the boat this winter.

Just about done everything and I’m trying to install the belt and I’ve been reading my different answers on the forums. My motor does not have a timing pointer option on it, it’s the older ones where the flywheel has only the 3 vertical markings on it and the sticker is on the flywheel cover shroud / top of engine cover. I have my motor to TDC on cylinder 1 with a dial indicator so I know that parts 100% correct but can’t seem to get a straight answer on where the dist pulley should be. Line the nubs up to each other? Or point the arrow at the crank centre? Any help would be much appreciated thank you

Welcome aboard.

With #1 at TDC and the flange off the timing pulley, the arrow on the timing pulley will point exactly to the center of the crankshaft.

Pull the plugs and turn the flywheel CW, only CW, back to TDC and the arrow must point to the center of the crank. You may need to lead or lag the belt a tooth on the timing pulley to get the arrow pointing to the center of the crank when it's all done.

BTW - Check compression and spark on each cylinder. A dead cylinder can cause low WOT.
