High guys, I have a question for the old but not dead gurus. This mercury has the timing tape on the top cow and not on the flywheel, the flywheel only has three dots on it. To me I believe that I should use those dots for the timing. Anyone that can clear up this would be will appreciated. I don't know when mercury changed this. Thanks Buz

It would be best to get a TDC dial and manually find it and make your own marks. Then do a lync and sync

Buz, the three dots are used to align the cast arrow on the distributor pully with the flywheel. They are not the TDC indicator. That should be some small distance to the left of the three dots. Best to look again for it.

Re: 1972 mercury 1400 l6

I do now about the link and sink, my only question is that this is a stock motor and there is no evidence that there was a timing tape on the flywheel and the timing tape is on the top cowl. I was just wondering if mercury put the tape on the cowl and there is no marks other than the three dots on the flywheel, the three dots must be the marker for the timing. I have two motors one is 1972 140l6 and 1971 135l6 and both are marked in the same way. Mercury must have used this at one time and then changed over to the timing tape on the flywheel, I was just wondering about this way of setting the timing in the old days. Thanks Buz
