I have a 1973 OMC tilt that feels like it needs bled, but doesnt. I had the entire thing apart today and the two seals on the shaft looked and felt good. There is one O ring seal and another that both looked in great shape. I'm at a loss as to why it has a slow leakdown, but it doesn't leak fluid outside the unit.

I don't see a rebuild kit out for this tilt unit either which sucks. Any advice?

This is on my 50 hp evinrude outboard.

Is this a 72 engine with a 73 tilt (only) kit on it? Not a combination trim and tilt kit? You can look up the part numbers on the factory website: epc.brp.com. You will have to look under the outboard accessories for that model year to find the parts list for the tilt kits-it is not part of the basic engine itself. Was sold as an option that year. Likely all the orings and valves are sold separately.

If I remember correctly there are some o-rings on the manual bypass valve that could be part of your problem.

Sorry, no, its a 1972 all the way around, tilt only.. I edited the title, forgot about the body. Thanks also for the tip about the manual bypass, Daviet. Looks like I need to pull that valve out and check it.

pulled the manual release valve, replaced the two O rings, pulled the piston, replaced two O rings, no change. I really feel the issue is in the valve body. The valve body consists of two gears, intertwined, and two check balls in two recessed holes. At the top of the unit is a spring and check ball also. It looks really simple, but keeps leaking down slowly. Over the course of a minute, it will leak down to the full down position. I bleed the unit by turning the manual release screw in all the way, power tilting it up, then backing out the screw until it goes down. Rinse and repeat a few times. The manual says to turn the manual release screw out 4 turns and then manually lift the outdrive, but that is impossible to do. You cannot lift the outdrive with the manual release screw backed all the way out.

Wondering if I'm missing a spring or something internally...
