1972 sea ray cuddy cabin

Got a call from a guy with a 1972 Sea Ray cuddy cabin. It's got an straight 6 in it, he says the outdrive and motor is in good shape, but the boat hasn't been out in 2 seasons, so it needs some clean-up, etc... theoretically, it needs old gas out, new in, oil, etc...

he wants $1200 for it and the trailer. Good buy? I was thinking of offering $1000.

Well the straight 165's ran forever,pretty much bullit proof with minimal maintence.If the floor feels solid and the transom has the stock hardware on it then it's a G all day long. How long is she? Dual axle trailer? Any hour meter? Any canvas? What are you looking to use it for,fishing,skiing,cruising,or nothing in particular.Probably could not hurt to run a compression test. The outdrive should be checked for the color of oil, if milky figure on spending 300-500 at a marina if they do the seals. The bellows is the one other thing to check, if there shot your universals may be gone or with the shift cable bellows you will get a small amount of water in the boat everytime you go out,or constant if you dock it.You will be throwing some money at it one way or another.

So I went and looked at it... Pass. The engine looked solid, and the outdrive was good, but the interior was shot. Too much work and money needed to make it a nice boat. Looks like I still need a trailer for my 1978 Starcraft Islander!
