hi, I've recently received a 1972 sears 4.5 outboard. it hasn't been started in at least 15 years. I don't know much about outboards. I've put a new spark plug took off the bowl and cleaned it. the choke was stuck on, got that working. put I fresh gas. the only problem is the gas I put in is 50:1 and know it's supposed to be 24:1. the problem I'm having is it will run and idle. it just will not come up on high idle. when I move the lean rich knob it doesn't make much difference, and when I take it from start to fast it doesn't make much of a difference. everything seems to be moving fine. i'm at the end of the little knowledge I have. any advice would be helpful.

Have you screwed around with the high speed needle on the bottom of the bowl? You're not likely to get away without a carb rebuild. The carb needs to be taken apart and ALL the passages cleaned, new fuel pump element, etc. You don't post a model #, but if you have the year right, it looks like a 217.59462;

That motor has a water pump, too, and you should replace the impeller.

thank you, I set the screw at the bottom of the bowl a turn and a half off closed, and I haven't tried adjusting since, so i'll try messing with that. I've never tried a complete carb rebuild before, I guess it's time to learn. is the water pump impeller hard to replace? thank you
and yes that is my model #
