i have a 1972 evinrude 50hp that does not have the standard tilt tube style steering cable attachment... it must be attached to the transom with a mounting clip.. i dont like this method, its flimsy... if i buy a tilt tube from boaters world, they have them for 14.99, aluminum, can i weld or attach to my motor so that i can use the newer style steering, and by newer i mean after 1976?

anybody ever done this

I'll bet not and I'll bet you won't get anybody to try cobble some junk together to save a few bucks. The kit that is available is not flimsey and the manufacturer has risked a lot of liability
exposure by selling it- for nearly 20 years. People sometimes get killed when steering fails, so buy the kit or make your own and assume the responsibility.
Backfire ;)

My current Boat's transom would not allow me to run the cable through the tilt tube so I purchased a kit for less that $50 that had three boltss that went through the transom, and the cable bolts to it, it definatly is not flimsy. I had the same set up in my last boat, it never failed, and I bet there the our a ton of old boats made before 1973 that have the same setup.
