Picked up this boat with great trailer, great motor, hull and transom, for 400$. The only thing thats wrong, was a completely rotted deck and stringers. Im only 16, and i have a bass boat as well, but have never done a floor rebuild. She has 85 evinrude on her, btw. I have began pulling the deck off, and im about ready to start pulling up stringers. I was really hoping for some good advice and pointers. I will be posting pictures and keeping updated!

Welcome to iBoats!

What have you done to ensure the Transom is sound? Usually when the deck, and stringers are rotten the transom has issues as well.

Looking forward to the pics.

These should give you and idea on how to get started...

Thanks for the warm welcome! I got into the back of the boat, and everything seems sound, also, got my 255 pound butt on the outboard and it did not flex one bit. I hope its good though. also, the reason the floors did rot, was someone jumped and putt a foot through the deck, and allowed water to pool there, the transom was dry though.

welcome newboater. you are just up the road from me.

your best way to check is to drill some holes for core samples to check it out and the hammer sounding. you have come to the right place for help there are some great guys here. just remember you may not get an answer right away as people are working on their own projects as well, but you will get help.

let's see the pics!!!

Welcome newboater .... rr is spot on with the drilling of the core samples on your transom. Just be sure and drill from the inside of the boat and not thru the outter skin. Post lots of photos so everyone can see what you see. Good luck with your project.

Keep one thing in mind, with your comments - some one jumped in the boat and put a hole thru the floor - well, that's not supposed to happen on any decent made boat. It should take that kind of stuff anytime. The probable reason was that the stringers were rotten and in tern the floor was rotten underneath. All it took was a big step and then ....
That's how most people find rot in their boat, a step or jump then - hole.
As far as the transom, mine was rotten in some places and could probably take the weight of the whole boat on it. Doesn't mean that there is not rot in there. You really need to take the advice and drill to be sure.
On mine there was rot where the stringers met the transom. The stringers were seperated from the transom by a layer of fiberglass which is semi-porous. With a water soaked stringer, the water just seeped into the wood of the transom. Small amount anyway.
Even with just a little it's just crazy not to do it right and replace if need be.

Welcome Newboater. Steurys were real well boat hulls back in the day and that 85 should be a great motor for it. Good luck with your project.
