First post here, and this place amazes. Thanks to all who contribute!

I have this outboard, and the coil was bad. Couldn't find any, so I rebuilt this one. I managed to get it to start by cleaning the carb, but I'm stuck now. It won't start at all. When it last ran it would only start/run at wide open throttle, and you could use the choke to control the RPMs. Since then I took it apart again and tried adjusting a couple things, but to no avail. I adjusted the idle screw to one full turn out from closed. My biggest question I guess is about the float. I don't think anything is blocking it up, but the spring for the needle is a little sprung. Looks like the float is parallel with the rest of the carb when I hold it upside down. Is that about right, or should it get closer to the carb? I can play with it by inverting the sring and pushing it down on the pin, just don't know where it should be.

So in review: Good spark, new plug, new water impeller, checked the fuel pump (no splits or leaks), no clogs in screen, flapper valve seems ok. the valve to empty the bowl sticks open, but I can get it to close and seal, so don't think that's the issue. Good compression. Carb hasn't had a real rebuild, but this is a motor I don't have a boat for, so limited on what I can spend.

So, any ideas please?

welcome to iboats jay, if you prime the cylinder with gas does it fire for you ? if it does then a thorough carb cleaning is in order. remove from the motor and completly break it down including removal of the welch plugs. soak all parts in gas for a day or two 87 octane should be good. clean all ports orifices and any small jetting areas, a thin piece of wire threaded through all areas will help to remove any tiny particles of gum and debris. blow compressed air through all ports, make sure all parts are nice and clean inspect for wear or cracking and reassemble the carb. good luck on your project. if you need parts let us know as there are many easy ways to get parts.
