1973 115 hp Johnson

I have just replaced the water pump impeller and housing. As I tighten the housing bolts I can no longer turn the impeller shaft by hand. Is this normal? This is my first water pump replacement.

You mean the drive shaft. Yes, it's normal. It gets harder to turn with the impeller in place. If you use both hands you could probably turn it or try using vise grips.

Hey Gale,

I've got the same motor and replaced my first water pump about two weeks ago. Yes, its tough to turn. If you use both hands you can make it turn, I did it to make sure the fins where going in the right direction. Just be sure to turn the shaft clockwise.
