Help . the problem i have is 1973 evinrude 135 V4 at an idle or trolling it backfies, ruff idle and dies after it dies have to choke it to restart, payed boat repair person to replace what he said was the problem, Reed valves and that my carbs were bad, fuel pump weak and vent in one tank and i said might as well replace the bulb too, well long story it's right back to his shop. Well when i pick up the boat he also said he changed the type of plugs from the stock UL77V to a type of plug that has a tip and are gapable. Now before i took it in i did soom cking myself car buff, all the coils test good and no arc in the dark, battery stays charge up so i think the stator is making juice. It dose it all the time and can't even get the boat off the trailor but if you do and get it up in RPMs it runs like it should but you got to get past the idle first

If it is running fine at higher RPM's, I would say you have something in your carbs. You should go thru them again, soak them over night, blow them out with compressed air and use a OEM carb kit. Verify float level as well when reassembling those carbs.... Although, It could very well be a synk and link issue, and or a timing issue as well.

If you payed a mechanic to do all this work, take it back to him... But I would lean towards the carbs first...

I believe Champion QL77JC4 are an alternative for that motor. If that was what the mechanic installed you will be OK.... They should be gapped at .040 I believe..

Is it actually backfiring thru the exhaust or spitting back thru the carbs?

The carbs have been gone thru three times once by me and twice by different mechanics the poping is only thru the exhaust and when it runs in the tank your can smell the fuel, as for the carbs they are as clean as they can get i've even took out all the plugs inthe carbs and have restamped the also there is no play in the throttle plates and have had the synk look at also.one thing that get me is there is no adjustment for the carbs.it almost acts like it miss one time then pops the second round,it has been doing this for along time most of the time i just jamm it and deal with it but it is getting old and i can't really afford a different boat or lower end. HELP in TAXAS it's flooding too.

If the engine is actually backfiring (not popping) out the exhaust as per Dhadley's question, in all probability the flywheel key is sheared somewhat which would throw the engine out of time. However, in which case, it should be impossible for the engine to run at all.

With the engine running, and popping, and the carburetor face plate removed, one carburetor throat at a time, insert two fingers into one throat then the other etc. If the engine dies down when you insert those two fingers, you could assume that side of the carburetor is okay.

But if the engine has a tendency to smooth out, and the popping ceases to exist, you have found the source of the problem/popping. Worth a try.

have had the flywheel off to ck the stator and all wiring under the flywheel will try blocking air to each cyl.
