i have a 73 ted williams 15 horse and i am having trouble with starting, every 5 pulls it shoots a flame out of the carb throat. Also everytime i take the flywheel off to check the spark advance bushing in the middle of the crank and put it back together the motor starts immediately and then after 5 seconds of run time it dies. Im confused, does the spark advance bushing under the flywheel have to be in a certain spot before i put the flywheel back on? Im horrible at troubleshooting an engine, so i really dont know what my problem is. This motor has never ran for me long enough for me to adjust idle! is it even worth my trouble, maybe i should use it as a boat anchor!

maybe i should use it as a boat anchor!

No don't do that, send it to me in the name of science. :p

I'm attaching a photo of the correct position of the trigger but I'm betting thats not your problem, chances are the CDI's capacitors will not hold there charge or at the very least one or both are failing.

I have just finished rebuilding a 15hp CDI with new caps, join the yahoo group and I would be glad to help you there.

hey i appreciate the help, i positioned the trigger just like yours or close as it would allow and found no real difference, do you think it would be worth putting some money into this outboard, if so how much do you think the cdi capacitors are to replace?

theres no guarantee but if you join the group I can walk you through cap replacement and parts needed or you can send it to me and I can replace them, Iboats does not allow soliciting and I would prefer not to post the information or details for the repair here.

Some things are just to cool to share with everybody ;)

Please educate me, now when you say cap replacement, what exact part is this on the engine, is it the two square boxes above each spark plug at rear of engine, or is it under the flywheel?

there in the stator under the flywheel, you have 2 modules each one has a 250v capacitor from 1973 vintage...they can be killed or damged in several ways or they can just naturally decay and start losing there values. almost a sure bet but its possible that something else has failed like a trigger coil, risitor etc etc etc. which could mean the unit is unrepairable but cap replacment is the easiest way to find out and the cheapest. cap replacement $65 +shipping or DIY, a new CDI SSI $250 +shipping, CDI will not repair the unit but will sell you a new SSI unit.

that's really ridiculous how these electronic parts are so pricey, you would think if they lowered the price they would sell more parts, instead of sitting on the shelf, oh well it is what it is,so the 65 dollars sounds like a good route to take on this motor!

I would like to see you DIY, but you need some skill with a dremmel tool and soldering gun and small propane torch....I have the 400v capacitors that fit like a glove ( not all do ;) ) and with some pictures and instruction I believe you could change them yourself, it is a bit labor intensive and you can get a good dose of epoxy dust down your lungs with out a mask,
you need to join the yahoo group for me to share the info by e-mail and learn what we know but I'm not twisting your arm.

Explanation? I tried to put the information out here but between the crappy search function and no interest in a sticky thread for the Eska files I don't intend to wear myself out repeating the info over and over again.

If you do join the yahoo group just make a note that your from Iboats and its you with the twin 15hp, I think you may be pleasantly suprised at what you can learn and do.

And CDI don't care if your 15hp Eska sets and rots....you will pay there tote or.....
