I recently removed the lower unit to replace the water pump impeller and the shift linkage going into the lower unit came out. Tried to reinstall it to no avail, unscrewed big nut that holds it into the lower unit, has a hole it fits into down in the very bottom, you can see a shaft rotate when you spin the prop but seems to be nothing for it to attach to. Lower unit is in forward and will not come out. Anybody got any suggestions on what to do. The motor ran fine in forward and reverse before removing lower unit, no i seem to have another problem. Fixed one and now got another, can anyone suggest some options on what to do!

Re: 1973 1500 merc 150hp lower unit question

The little trick in the tread that was posted worked i got the pin to pull back and the shift rod to drop back down as it should. One problem though, i seen no place for the splines to line up on the shift rod so that it would shift the gears, it drops down into the hole and just spins. As i said before it worked before, what am i doing wrong? any other suggestions. The thread said something about lining up the shift cam with the splines on the shift rod but i see nothing to do that with. The shift cam did slide back, but was i supposed to rotate it to find a hole with which to slide the shift rod into?
