Hey guys I'm back. This '73 is going to be the death of me. As soon as I get one system running, another one fails. To this point I have rebuilt the carb, resealed the crankcase, replaced points, condensers, coils (primary and secondary), replaced old fuel lines, resealed the lower unit, and had the clutch dog and forward gear machined back into specs. I just got back home from a night of bowfishing and am slightly irritated at this engine. I GPS'd it running at 24 MPH on the way to the fishing holes, it idled well the entire time, but after I shut it down to shoot some fish then tried to head back home it refused to crank. My compression is still holding at 125 for the top cylinder and 120 for the bottom. As previously stated I have rebuilt the entire ignition yet I have absolutely no spark now. Has anyone ever heard of an old magneto ignition system that eats primary exciter coils? I have no spark on either of the plug wires therefore I am assuming that it is the primary coil. When I installed the new primary, I made sure to get the edges flush with the edges of the ignition base so that the magnets of the flywheel would not strike it. Does this sound anything like what anyone else has dealt with in the past? I am just about ready to sell this engine if I can't make any headway on it. I have been constantly working on it since February and it has been nothing but a pain. The irritating part is that it will run great and then just totally go to crap without any warning.
