1973 2hp johnson need help with the starter recoil

we were testing a 2hp johnson/evinrude outboard motor we put it in water and my husband went to start it and he pulled the handle to start it the propeler moved he did it a few times and then the handle did not retrack back in. also on top of the motor a screw kept loosening while doing this. well we then took the top off the motor and bam the starter coil came out and unraveled and now we have a mess we are wondering how to put it back together any help?????

Ha Ha. I have a 1973 2 hp Evinrude on my bench with the same woes. So far. because it isn't solved yet, I've found that using a vice to hold the spring once it is wound tight lets me get my grip back to seat it into the reel.

I tried securing the coil with a piece of string to set the coil back into the reel and thaat worked. I snipped the string once the coil was where I wanted it. But no luck in getting the recoil action on the cord. I believe the idea is to set up with a fully coiled spring and a fully wound pull cord.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

This worked for me.

I coiled the recoil spring tightly in my hand and slipped it into the bench vise with plywood to protect the spring steel. With the recoil spring held by the vise I tied a string around the coil leaving the inner end free. Then I removed the bound coil from the vise and set it into its retaining dish. I jiggled it around until it looked right with the tethering end as snugly seated to its slot as possible. Then I carefully untied the string and drew it out. So far the spring is sitting under full tension in its proper position. Then I wound the pull cord completely on its spool except for one turn. This left some room to align the inner end of the coil with the pin in the middle (or so) of the top piece that engages the flywheel. It took a few tries. Then I set the screw and tightened it. If you wound the cord the wrong way you?ll find out. Just carefully remove the pull cord spool, rewind the cord and seat it on the middle pin again. Good luck.

Now. How do I get in there and replace the spark plug wire?
