1973 40hp evirnude spark plug wires and coils

Hi guys,

My motor is working great but I notice this past weekend that both coils have cracks in them and one spark plug cap is all eating away.

Here's the problem, I tried purchasing a coil for 73 motor and its does not match, the 74 one looks like it will match.

The numbers on the motor are 40354d, on evinrude site they say its a 1973 but they don't even sell coils and ignition wires for it. Are 73-74 interchangeable?

Any help and recommendation on brands and where to purchase would be greatly appreciated

All you gotta do is crunch the numbers. 580971 has been superceded by 584477, which is 18-5181 here at iboats.

The spark plug boot and spring terminal is 581027, which is 18-5750 here at iboats.

The wire--you find somebody that stocks copper core spark plug wire and cut a hunk off the roll. If your local auto parts store doesn't stock it, try your local marina. If your local marina doesn't have it, shame on them. Then try a tractor supply store or lawn mower shop.

Yes, that is the control cable for your motor, buy the length that you need. It comes without the ends. The ends are part of the control. Remove them from the old cable and re-use them on the new one. If you don't have the old cables, then you don't have the whole control. In that case, see your Evinrude dealer.

I have the whole controls, however it wont go into reverse from the lever. Its missing like an 1/8 of an inch on the motor connection. I can either have neutral and reverse or forward and neutral.


Thank you for the info on the plugs and coil pack.

Thats not the same coil I have on my motor. I have the one off a 74.

I don't know how you managed to do that. 1973 and 1974 have totally different magnetos. 1973 has the OMC Universal Magneto, and 1974 has the Low Tension Magneto. The 1973 Universal one is the one I quoted, and has the coils under the flywheel. The 1974 Low Tension coils are located externally.

Somebody has done an extreme switheroo on your motor. Replaced the entire powerhead??? Replaced the model/serial number plate???

OK, assuming you really do have a 1974, the coil is part number 502880 from any Evinrude dealer or 18-5196 from iboats. Comes with the wire and plug boot attached.

The inner wire may have been broken in your control cable, and the end reattached. OR, the cable end may have slipped on the wire.

I believe there is a new power head on it because there is new gaskets all over the motor so it was opened up at some point. My coils are external.

Quiet possible the previous owner had a spare motor (74) that he used to rebuild my motor (73)...who knows with a 37 year old motor right..

One more question, I'm also looking at buying a new prop because mine has a few nicks in it. How do you determine the prop pitch you want?
