This is my first outboard or boat for that matter. Nearing completion of my 1967 starcraft mariner restoration and hit a few speedbumps.Main issue is the steering. Boat had cable and pulley which i am definitely not using again. ive looked at the teleflex setups and those look pretty easy/affordable but just not sure how they would hook up to this older outboard. any ideas? also wondering how the wiring hooks up. i hooked up the black wire to the only spot i could see that had a loose bolt from the PO. and it looks like the red would hook up to this bolt in the second picture? Again, i have no knowledge of engines so go easy on me haha. thanks for taking a look.

Red hooks up at the solenoid in 3rd picture.----Black mounts to a bolt stud usually found in front of the starter on intake manifold.

I've got the exact same engine. The motor spins freely and no problem with the starter, but she won't turn over. I replaced the coils and still having the sample problem. Any thoughts as to why she won't turn over?

Got spark? I really only know very basic stuff about engines. Luckily I have some friends who know more than I do, just not easy getting free time to get them over. Might have to send the wife to a spa day, drop the kids at Grammys and grab a keg. That'll lure em in!

Steering cable goes through the tilt tube, and a drag link returns back to the tiller arm. Throw away that piece of home made junk that's on the tiller arm now. Be sue to lubricate the cable where it goes through the tilt tube and put it on your maintenance list to relube periodically.

Another question.. I dont have a battery yet but finally got gas tank and adapter for it so i can try to start the engine. Can i hook the wires that would go to the battery terminals to some jumper cables and try starting it that way?

Not having a battery will probably stuff up the stator and or rectifier.
If you have a car you could use that battery. Make sure you remove it from the car, if you put jumper cables directly on to the battery from the boat motor you could damge part of the cars electrics
