I just purchased a 1973 Evinrude 6 HP and it is having trouble starting. I'd say it starts appx once every 50 tries. I just put new spark plugs in with the ones it calls for on the motor and added new 87 octane fuel with 1:50 Pennzoil Marine engine oil (T3W?).

Does anybody have any suggestions on what I could do to get this working? I hear alot about having to clean the carb but is there a way I can learn how to do this online? Do I need anything special?

I don't really have any extra money so I'm hoping its somethign I can fix on my own. If not can somebody give me a rough estimate on how much this might cost to get fixed? $50? $100? $150?

Jeff

Hi, Jeff.

It will cost a lot more to get someone else to overhaul your carb than it would cost to get a manual and learn how to do it yourself. Try $65 to $75 per hour.

A manual will cost you about $30, and a carb kit about $12. The manual is reusable.

If you have questions, we are here. :)

JB is right, you need a manual. You say it starts ever 50 tries.

>How does it run once it starts?
>Did you check for spark when it didn't start?
>Are you using the choke appropriately?
>Did you try priming the carb with some premix? >Did it help?

You must determine if its a fuel, spark, or compression issue. Start with the easiest first... :)

Thanks for your replies.

>How does it run once it starts?

It usually konks out.

>Did you check for spark when it didn't start?

No, how can I do this?

>Are you using the choke appropriately?

When I first try to start the engine I put it in neutral then push the choke back and forth about 4 times then leave it pushed in half way. Then if it starts I pull it out for a few seconds then push it in.

>Did you try priming the carb with some premix? >Did it help?

What is premix? How do I do this?

Obviously I'm very new to this. How long does it normally take to fix something like this? 1 , 2, 4 hours? Since I don't really have any money, if I found a shop in town and asked them to look at it to see if they could fix it for $75 do you think they would do this?

Jeff

try starting it with the choke pulled out all the way. leave it there till its fires, then push in 1/2 way :)

take some mixed fuel and squirt it into the carb directly. If this helps start it and it runs for a second or two, you need a carb clean. If this makes no difference, check for spark.... :)

Re: 1973 6 HP Evinrude Will Not Start

i'm kinda in the same boat as you. new to all of this. to find out if you have spark. remove plug replace wire and set the tip close to motor and pull string and watch for fire (close to dark is best time for this). i was getting nothing until i soaked the carb in carb cleaner over night. i got it started and it was starting on the first pull. took it to the lake and it flooded out. i've checked the float and everything now i'm just frustrated. think i'll take it to someone.i dont have the money either but it looks like i have no choice.
