1973 6 hp water pump question

Long story short - bought a boat and motor. It runs great but, I knew the motor wasn't pumping water so, overheating was an issue (it was only started and ran 4-5 min. max), and it was never used, and just sat. I watched the owner put the pump kit in it, and thought, at the time, he was placing the gasket in the wrong place. He put the gasket on top of the stainless steel plate. I am re-doing it, and upon taking the pump apart, I can see the impeller is rubbing on the edge of the gasket, and not allowing the bottom of the impeller to sit against the stainless steel plate. I have the owners manual for the motor, and the only gasket, it shows is the one below the base housing plate (aluminum plate), at the bottom of the pump. The drawing does not show a gasket on top of, or underneath of, the stainless plate. I've cleaned the intake screen, and blown it out with compressor, replaced the thermostat (just in case), ran compressed air through the tube, etc. SO - should I clean the gasket off the top of the stainless plate, put the pump, and motor back together, and give her a try?

i think that gasket is for sealing the water pump from the gearcase not for sealing the pump itself. if the gasket below the retainer was not touched i would just clean up the plate under the impeller and see if its ok.

So , is this waterpump the factory original as installed in 1973 ?--Or is it a replacement kit to a newer style pump ?---It does make a difference.

Thanks, hardwater fisherman, gasket below retainer is intact. Racerone, it must be a replacement kit, as it has a metal insert that the impeller goes inside of, and then to top of the pump slides over it, and I don't see that insert, on the original
manual's drawing, of the pump.

Ok, so now you need to look up how the new pump kit is installed.-Including the gaskets.---Look it up for a 79 model 6 HP and see how it is assembled.

Racerone - found the drawing, you're referring to, and for a '79 6 hp. it DOES show a gasket, on top the side of the wear plate. SO, according to my fuzzy way of thinking, I should be able to put it back together, and it should work. - I'll let you know if it works!

The manual calls for Type M sealant between the bearing plate and the stainless housing, not the gasket.

Problem is that the bearing plate has been exposed to water for 30+ years and is long pitted.
Assembly without sealant- it may not pump.

I always apply RTV to the bearing plate and have never had any issues.

I have a website that shows this step by step...

It's outbroadmotors.com
Then click 'repair' and then the 6603 6HP. You see the water pump assembly pictures.

Also- don't run it for 5 minutes.
I had a 10hp seized on me after less than 3 minutes of running with no water.

This may have jut been my luck, but still not a good idea.

The topic of this discussion is the replacement kit and not the original parts.

The newer improved pump is the same below the housing.

Gasket goes on top. Sealant below.

Also- good idea to remove the power head and change the lower crankshaft seals.
Chances are when re-inserting the driveshaft, you'll knock the o-ring out of place.

Re: 1973 6 hp water pump question

Well, I got it back together, and it's pumping water. But, I noticed she was leaking oil from the seam between the gear case, and the lower case, onto the garage floor, over night. So, I pulled the gear case and sure enough there was some water in it. I'll see if I can find some .100" gasket material, at iboats. I'll see if they have the "O" ring seal for the prop shaft, too. I pulled the lower case, and it was coated with water/oil, too. Sheesh. I didn't put it in gear, and I only ran it for about 10 minutes. When I put the lower end unit oil in, I used a small funnel, and put it in through the "level" hole. A fair amount dribbled, and I am thinking it got into the "reverse" water intake, just below the hole. What I can't quite figure is why it would be inside the upper case, lower case, basically all over in there. Any ideas?

You totally messed up in filling the gearcase.---------Gearcases are filled by squeezing oil into the drain hole until it comes out the vent hole.-------You then install the vent plug.---Then remove the filling tube and intall the drain plug.---This procedure is done with the motor in the normal running position.

Thanks, racerone. I read you loud and clear - I've already cleaned everything up, and will follow your directions.

Buying a new gear case seal kit. It sat for a week, with no leaks. I was going to start it yesterday, but, low and behold, it leaked about 5 or 6 drops, over night, and it is leaking from the shaft (SLOW drip from the prop blade). I can't take any chances on it, so it's new seal kit time. Getting antsy to wet a line!
