I recently picked up a boat that came with a 1973 85 hp Johnson model 85ESL-73M. The motor is not running. Control cable steering cable are all disconnected. Battery cable are cracked. There is a lot of rusty bolts under the cowling. The screws on the lower unit fluid holes are also missing. There may be other parts missing that I am not aware of.

So I need some advise what I shall do about it. Is it worth any effort and money in this old motor? I know in the minimum I need to get new spark plugs, rebuild the carbs, install new impeller, add gear fluid, etc.

Here are some pictures.

The fact that the drain plug is missing could be a problem, if any water, dirt got in there during it's storage time. Before I put a nickel into this engine, a compression test is needed. No need to put $ into it of one of the holes is dead. Get the starter working and get it to crank at least 250 rpm's, then do the test. New, the engine probably had 125 lbs compression. Compare that with your 4 cyls. If you put any oil in the cyls to free up the rotating assy, it can affect the compression numbers, so crank it enough to dissipate any extra oil. If it tests out ok-compression wise, then make your plan to fix any items.

Obviously it has set for some time and therefore many wires, fuel lines and part are corroded and in need of TLC. Some parts will need replaced. But as emdsapmgr stated, Start with a compression test and see what it does. The fact that is has set so long, I would most certainly put some oil in the cylinders to keep from scaring the pistons and cylinders cranking dry. The Items you initially mentioned are items that most any engine sitting would need. So if the compression is good or fair or even about even between the cylinders, then YOU have to decide if you want to bring it back to life. Parts are still available to do that if you want... JMHO!

emdsapmgr and gm280, thanks for the advise. I will try to do compression test first.
