1973 9.8 Mercury

I have a 1973 9.8 Mercury I had to take off the LU to check the water pump because it failed the water tank test. All I was getting was a little smoke.when I put it back together now I can’t put it into reverse can someone please explain how to fix it. Thanks in advance

The shift shaft must have moved on you. look in the stickies at the top of the Mercury forum for shift shaft set up. It will help you get everything right.

Sounds like you did not match the position of the shift shaft in the lower unit with the shift lever up on the lower housing. Take the LU off again and match neutral to neutral, then re-install
