1973 9.9 Johnson outboard

My 1973 9.9 Johnson outboard starts up fine and runs smooth with an intermitten knock or bang/miss. Any help on what the problem might be

I have a 75 and it farts from time to time. I have not bothered to mess with it.

ibuyre....turn the low speed needle or adjustment counter clockwise about 1/4 turn and see if that stops it. May be a lean cough. And by the way, if it's a 73', then it's a 9.5hp. 9.9/15's didn't come out till 74'.
