I have a 1973 Evinrude 85hp and it will not start from a cold start w/o spraying fuel directly in the carb's. I overhauled the carbs last season...no change. I have pumped the primer bulb @ WOT...no change. I've replace the primer bulb...no change. I've cleaned the fuel pump screen...no change. Dumb question...Could it be the fuel pump? Engine runs great after warming up...unless it sits for a few hours...then it needs a little persuasion again.

The choke flaps need to slam 100% shut, 99.94% won't do it. You can loosen the clamp & move the choke solenoid to adjust the linkage. Mine does the same thing, OMC later went to primers, I bet to fix this problem. Mine's (1975 115) takes a few tries to start when cold (it has a stumble), then after about 10 seconds, it suddenly clears up & will start with the flick of the key. By the way, the last 3 1973-77 V4s I've had have all started the same way.

When it's cold, advance the warm up lever all the way, then hit the key.

It's not your pump - the fuel bulb will override that anyway.

Thanks. I will make sure it's closing the full 100% and not the Ivory 99.44

I appreciate it.
