Ok guys so ive been a merc man since ive owned my boat but now im looking at repowering it with a 73 evinrude 115. The motor has been sitting a few yrs & the guy said that he knows one of the floats is stuck in the carb. It has good fire & he's going to check the compression for me so let me ask you guys what the compression should be? The motor is located a few hours away from me so i wanted to know if these are suppose to be good motors with the yr model? He's only asking $400 for it & said it turns over fine. Any advice or help is glady appreciated. Thx

Its a crap shoot, if it will run then its a good buy, and having good spark is a good indication. The stator and timer base are both pricey so hopefully they are fine. Does it have tilt and trim. If it does and it works correctly that can be worth $400.00 by itself. compression should be over 100psi but more importantly within 10 percent of each other as different gauges read differently and few are calibrated. For a good motor thats a good price, but you could easily end up having to spend 700 - 1000 in parts if some of the major pieces fail on the electrical side. Even more on the mechanical side.

I would go for it, if it doesnt work out you could probably at least make your money back on the tilt n trim alone if its working.

im in the same deal, picked up a 70 85 hp evinrude for less than $200. wouldnt start, but it was just dirty points. then she fired right up and idles nice. the tilt works but i have to replace the o ring in the pump... but i havent water tested it yet so.....
