hello
first time posting, I just got a 1973 evinrude 115 it was running good at 2000 rpm+ but bad idle. I adjusted the throttle plates and go it to idle at 800-900 in nuetral but i dont know what the problem with the timing. I check the flywheel with a timing light and reads about 10-15 degrees retarded? which my manual says 5 degrees advanced. i try to advance it and it idles up. what do i do? i took flywheel off key is still in place. thanks

Re: 1973 evinrude 115 timing problems

I have a 94 115. The timing specs on it are 4 deg btdc at idle. I think that would be 4 deg retarded. When timing your engine do the wot timing first use the joe reeves method in the engine faq pages on this site. Don't mess with the spark advance rod to adjust your idle timing that is done with the cam follower adjustment. Each motor has a detailed and varied procedure for a link and sync. I suggest you purchase a manual OEM specific to your motor to do a correct tune-up. Otherwise you are risking the potentiol for major engine damage if you run it with the timing or carbs set incorrectly.

Idle timing is set by the placement of the flywheel on the crankshaft. i.e. not adjustable. Sounds to me like you may have a sheared flywheel key.

I pulled the flywheel and the key is still in place.
