Need some help here understanding the battery charging side of the ignition system in the above mentioned motor. Here's what I do understand... The system has a rectifier (OMC P/N 583408) that charges the battery, unregulated, continuously, while the motor is running. Sometimes, even with a 6 amp system, the charge can be excessive to the point of harming the system & battery. A need for this system to have a voltage regulator has been established. There is a "kit" available from BRP to remedy this problem. It is a regulator (OMC P/N 173640). Now, what I don't understand... Does this regulator replace the rectifier, or is it used in addition to the rectifier? Are there other single rectifier/regulator combined units ( Merc, Yamaha, OMC) that can be used as well? Sorry for the TOME. Any advice offered will be appreciated.

173640 is used in conjunction with the rectifier. I seen a cheaper version some time ago on here that looked like it might work. Do some research on it or else somebody else may chime in here.

Appreciate the info, boobie. If you were adding a regulator, where would you prefer to install it? Near the battery (in the bilge), or under the motor cowl (where things are a lot hotter)?

Under the hood. It's a lot dryer plus less resistance in the wiring to get to the regulator.
