1973 evinrude 50 hp ?

I have a 50hp evinrude on a boat I just bought,I cracked it up yesterday and I noticed water coming from a square hole just above the lower case unit.I had motor sumerged to just above the intake in a tank the square hole looks like it should be there and water is coming from the top of the engine were I know it is suposed to be but I know very little about outboards.. Is this normal?

The water pump sits directly on top of the lower unit. You want the engine submerged to a point where the split area is 2 or 3 inches below the surface of the water.
