Hello, I found a 1973 Evinrude 65HP locally and have not gone to look at it yet. Is there any past known problem with this model? Is this a model that I should stay away from? Are the parts easily available? The owner says he has used it for the last 3 seasons and never had a problem. When I go and look at it I will do a compression test. What should be some of the other things to look for? Thanks :D
I see two cables... looks like it's a mechanical shift. (I believe '72 was the last year for the electric shift models) I'm not aware of any problems with this year/model. If the compression checks out and it seems to run and shift OK and the price is right - I'd go for it.

yep it is a manul shift i see 2 cables . it could be a 1974 i think that is when the tilt tube is where you put the stering cable and dont need the bracket. post the # on the plate can tell from that . thought it was 1974 when they stopped making the eletric shift . i could be rong . i have known to be .

the onley thing i found is the pistons in a 73 and a 74 was different but the newer ones would work with a wrist pen kit . the piston ring is close to top of piston . with no led gass i hear it isent good on them . use a ledd addative in gass and should be no probablem . i may be rong . i have a 1974 70 hp and i will run it with led addative

1972 was the last year for Selectric Shift. 1973 was the last year for 65hp models. They were replaced with 70hp models in 1974.

Take it out and do a in water test. I have a 1972 65hp. At idle on the muffs it runs perfect and you can not tell I have any problems with it. When I put it in the water though I can not get up to full speed at WOT. Its a spark problem at WOT that I am working on.

If the seller says it is working fine, don't just take his word for it. Take it out on the water and test it. It is the only way to be sure it is fully operational.

Also the engine in the picture is missing the air silencer. Ask the owner if he still has it and why it is/was removed.

Thanks everyone for your input.
I'm going to look at it in a day or so. I will post the model number.

-TR918-
So, 73 is the only year Evinrude 65HP with manual shift?

I had noticed the air silencer is missing, if he has lost it, I’ll have to find one, I wouldn’t want to run it with out it.

In the early to mid 70's the answer is yes.
