I am trying to pull the lower unit to change the impeller. I am able to pull the lower unit down about 1 inch before it stops sliding down. I called a boat mechanic and he said that I may need to pull the engine out to loosen the shaft. Does this motor require that? What am I missing? 1973 Evinrude Sportwin 9.5 Model # 9322B

look inside that gap and you'll see a brass coupler that couples the upper and lower shift rod...remove the lower screw completely and your shifter will be uncoupled and the lower unit should slide on down...shop2.evinrude.com has diagrams of your motor...look under year model...then hp.

Ok I did loosen the bottom screw completely because I assumed this coupler is what was holding it from coming out. However, there is another screw right above that one that I couldn't reach. I will check out the diagram you shared. Thanks

all you need is one of those screws out. Get some wood wedges or a pry bar wedge them into the gap and hit them with a hammer. it should break free. pulling the engine is a little over the top for Lower unit removal

Oh, and I noticed there was no gasket between there. Should there be one?

And do I need to grease any anything before I put the lower unit back on??

There is no gasket required for that model that's why there wasn't one.Grease your impeller well also the splines at the top of the drive shaft but don't put grease on top end of driveshaft as it could stop it from seating properly.
