1973 Evinrude 65 hp. Serial # 65373R 1973. Bought this boat a few months back, on the water test it ran great. Took it out the next weekend, and i got it to 31 mph (youtube video 1). The only problem was the tilt and trim didnt work, so i took it to a local repair shop to get a CMC Tilt and Trim installed, while it was there, the mechanic told me he would throw in a few prevenative maintainence parts cheap ( he installed used coil packs; mine were cracked;, he cleaned the stator, and rebuilt the fuel pump. ) * compression test done: All cylinders are hitting 110PSI, spark was checked, everything was fine. * Put the boat in the water to test everything out, and i could only get 8 mph out of it ( youtube video 2. ) something was definitly wrong. Called him back, he said he didnt know what was wrong, but would look at it and get it going. took it back to him, and a week later he calls and said it was the throttle linkage. So, again i put it in the water to test it out, and still only about 10 mph. It sounded like a fuel issue, so i spent $100 and just bought a new fuel pump myself, and installed it. while installomg it, i noticed a line at the bottom of the carb houseing not connected, so i reconnected it, put on new fuel pump, also bought a new tank and fuel line with bulb new fuel with new premium oil, and took it to the water and it ran great. about 20 mph ( youtube video 3) . It still didnt run as good as it did the first day i bought it, but much better than 8 mph. Just took it out yesterday ( 3-8-2014 ) with a buddy and some gear, and it would barely get on plane. the ticking noise was back. It sounds like its sucking in air somewhere, or something. Judge for yourself.
Video 1, the motor sounds great. Video 2, its making a gross, ticking, hesitation noise. Video 3, the noise is gone but not going full speed. Video 4, the ticking hesitation is back. You can hear the the rmp change in each of the videos.
I dont know what is going on, and would love any help. I dont see how the tilt and trim would make me lose so much speed. im thinking it something the mechanic did. could he have put bad coil packs on my boat, and thats why its not getting to full rpm?
thanks for the help

Sounds like ignition issues to me.--------Check for spark on each cylinder.------The spark must jump a gap of 7/16" on each plug lead !------No other test method is acceptable here.----??? cleaned the stator ???-Never heard of doing that and I have no idea why that would be done.

Do a compression test on it first because something could have happened since the last one. Then do a cylinder drop test on it to see which cylinder isn't firing. The ticking could also be coming from the lower unit.

I have done a compression test. 140, 138, 135.
Also did a spark test. All 3 cylinders show spark.
What's my next step?
It idles so clean and will rev all the way up on a water hose. It's when it has a load in the water is when it has trouble.

Forgot to mention I also ran the drop test. Each time I removed a spark plug wire it dropped RPM and idled terrible.

Is the timer base under the flywheel moving freely and are you getting full spark advance ??

The term " good spark " means very little.----The ignition system was engineered and built to be able to jump a gap of up to 1/2" and only that is a proper test.----Laying the plugs on the block is not the way a good mechanic tests spark on your outboard !

How can I check to see if the timer base is moving freely? I bought a spark tester from autozone and it shows spark. Do I need to make sure it jumps 7/16?

Move the throttle back and forth and look at it's travel distance. And it should jump 7/16".
