1973 Johnson 115 Tachometer

Can I fit a modern tachometer to this engine? I believe from searching these forums that any 12 pole 6 pulse unit should work and possibly plug right into the 1990 control box I am using with it. Some place I read it is difficult to make non period tachs work so I was looking for expertise here.

Yes. The original factory control box has a special grey wire, left stubbed out inside it. Open up the case and pull the grey wire lead thru the hole between the two control box halves on the bottom side. That grey wire is the signal wire for any marine tach. You can find + and - from any dash gauge to power the tach.

Be sure to put the tach on position # 6.
