Working on an old pontoon and have a problem ! First off, motor is hooked up to regular ign. Switch with a toggle for the electric choke, runs in that configuration. U
I purchased some Brp controls that have the red plug just like mine and were supposed to work with a Johnson outboard! I have no model # or instructions with the controls and have no idea how old they actuall are but they have not been installed or used from the looks of em. I plugged them in the other day and got nothing when tring to start. The teather is hooked up and I get main power to the fuse but nothing else . o tried wiggling the shifter while holding the key with no luck! I figure it could be neutral switch or the ign. But want know it it's actually compatible with my old motor. These are newer controls due to all the extra wires/plugs for gauge a
D such but o was told red plug is a red plug and all are the same! Did they change the plug wiring up over the years? I really don't want to tear the control apart if I ain't got too!

Did you check the fuse on the motor?

Yes I did, thank you for the reply. I hooked up the old plug and it started just fine! Its got to be the new controls either having a different wiring scheme or something in it isnt working. I sure dont want to strip the insulation off of the new controls just to see what color wire goes where, I want to keep it as nice as I can.

A RED PLUG is a RED PLUG, regardless of year-pretty much. All the basics are there, as far as I know.

You have to switch EVERYTHING over. As an example, you can't leave the battery hooked to one set and have the other standing by.

In other words, make a COMPLETE change over.

I have done what you are attempting, many times. Switching from the PowerShift II system to the newer, 1979-up, controls.

Well, I dont recall any wires that hook the controls to the battery directly. I have the main battery cables going to the solinoid and from what I can tell, thats how the controls get their power.. Gotta wait on good daylight, but Im pretty sure there the control cable/wire harness doesnt have any wires that break out that go directly to the battery.
