1973 johnson 65 horse out board

i have a vanguard banshee with a 65 horse motor ,now i have noticed that the old owner has move the motor up 1 hole on the motor mounts on the transom ,guys at work tell me that this will maybe slow my boat down in the water is this true,the old owner said that it did ,should i put it back down?

being a 73 i assume it does not have trim & tilt. the AV plate, the flat plate above the prop, should in line and 1 inch higher than a line staight and even with the keel of the boat. put a straight edge on the bottom of the boat, the AV plate should 1 inch higher, and inline with the straight edge. if it's not in line move the tilt pin.

The best speed is to run it as high as you can without it ventilating excessivly (prop sucking air from the surface). Too much air sucking, drop it down a hole. Some boats will tolerate the plate above the bottom, some won't.
