1973 johnson 65 horse out board

i have recently replaced the impeller on my motor and now when i put it in netural and high idle it the boat moves forward like its in gear but my shifter is in netural,i have also tryied putting it in reverse but nothing happens ,do you think that i have not put the shift rod back into correct position and if so how many turns until it is correct. that damn thing is hard to fiddle with ,thanks in advance for any info

When u put ur boat in reverse at the control box it's shifting it in neutral. The only reason u can start the boat is because when ur in neutral at the box it closes the circiut of a switch in there allowing ignition to happen. When u hooked up ur shift cable to ur shift rod it was in foward already but because the circiut was closed u were able to start it in gear. I believe there is 3 positions [no turns] for ur shift rod. Unhook shift cable put it in center position of movement... turn ur prop. if its in neutral it will turn either direction freely, if in foward will only turn clockwise etc. Once U've found neutral and ur in neutral at box hook up...
