1973 johnson 65 horse out board

my motor is on a vanguard banshee and when i start it my propeler spins in neutral ,how can i adjust this,also when i put it in forward i have to give it about 3/4 throttle before it kicks in it should not be this way right and if not can someone explain how to adjust it ? please help me i would love to just get it running right for this weekend!!!!

what is the model number? it may be a 72 and have electric shift.

model #65esl73r and has a powershift 2 throttle

ok verified it is a 73, so it is mechanical shift. when the engine starts the exhaust goes out the prop. the exhaust pressure, turn the prop. start it and with a stick, try to stop the turning. the prop should stop. if this motor is new to you, the carbs probably need to be cleaned and rebuilt. also your cables may be streched.

you can try adjusting the cables, remove cable at engine. motor and shifter in neutral. now adjust the trunion nut so that the cable slips on with out moving the shift linkage. throttle, same thing. engine all the way to idle, throttle in neutral fast idle lever down. adjust till cable will slip on.

so i should leave it in neutral and start the engine ,the prop should not move right?then unhook the cables and adjust install back up and tighten,if i pull the throttle a little back in to reverse it stops spinning?any ideas

adjustment done with engine off. remove the cable manually put the motor in neutral, then the control the adjust the cable,

how do i know when its in neutral on the motor when theprop spins in both directions freely and thankyou for all of your help tashasdaddy
