So I rebuilt my carbs and installed my new control box... and wouldn't start. Well come to find out there was no spark. So to try to narrow down the problem I used my old wire harness because it had perfect spark before i installed my new control box. Well it fired right up with the old wire harness. Everything on the new control box is the same except for the color of the ignition wire. My old ignition wire was all white. The ignition wire on the new harness is yellow with red stripe. Any suggestions on what to do? I just paid $125 for the new control box with wire harness and cables.

The yellow/red wire comes from the "S" terminal on the ignition switch to the neutral safety switch in the control box and then goes to one of the small terminals on the starter solenoid on the mtr. A black/yellow wire should go to one "M" terminal on the ignition switch and a ground wire to the other "M" terminal.

First post the complete model number for your motor so we know exactly what you have.

What color is the large round engine to boat harness connector at the engine, black, yellow, or red and are both the same color?

Model number is 65esl73r. And the color from engine to boat harness is RED.... And yes they are both the same color. But the control box I bought for the motor from what I looked up on the computer is from a late 80's to present Johnson.

Why are you swapping controls? Is there an existing problem?

because your ignition switch has an extra terminal for the choke as it is a key push choke your 65 has 5 terminals on ignition toggle switch choke ,i would take that wire off & move the rest in a chain ladder one terminal up , providing the black & yellow is not bridged with earth you should get spark then connect a toggle switch .if you look at the ignition swich on the drawing you will see you have 5 terminals & newer models have 6

Remove the black with yellow stripe wire from the power pack and check spark. If it sparks, you have a short somewhere in the black-yellow wire or keyswitch, or incorrect wiring. If there is still no spark, you have to troubleshoot the ignition system on the motor.
