I NEED HELP! My motor I just bought looks brand spakin' new. Even the motor has the original paint in top condition. I am convincd it has very low hours. But when I start it, it starts good when I just get it in the water, but it will then die no matter how long i warm it up. If it dies when it is in the start position, it will start back up fine with only one pull. The problem is that I usually kill the motor in the low shift position and when that happens, I have to choke the carb, pump the bulb and pull twice to get it to run. If not, it will not even try to start and leak gas everywhere (flooding). What's wrong with it? Even when I do this, Gas floods everywhere!!

Sounds like a sticking float. Take the carb apart and give it a good cleaning. Could also be that the fuel pump diaphram has dry rotted, and allowing too much gas to pass through when you are pumping it.

Your lucky, You wanna sell it? :D

I do not know if it is intergrated or not, but I'm pretty sure that it is. It does not have any type of external fuel pump(that I know of). But, how could I tell if it had one?

Look at the carb and see if it has a big square on the side of it. If so, that is the fuel pump. You can find parts here: www.mercruiserparts.com and just look it up by serial number.

Your 1973 9.8 merc 110 has a mercarb carburter with an integral fuel pump. Suggest you stop at your local library and check out some service manuals. I may have copies of what you need if you e-mail me your address, I will mail to you. I don't know how severe the fuel leakage is, but I also suggest you make sure it is running on both cylinders, or check spark to both cylinders. You may have a bad coil. On one cylinder, they do just as you describe, but a little less leakage.
I do think a carb kit is in order. Good Luck,
Lee
mattsdr@cybrzn.com

I'm back, one other thing. On one cylinder, they don't idle fast enough, and die when you shift. So really check that out.
