My lower unit is leaking oil out of the prop area and is also letting water in. As a novice should I try to put a seal kit in myself or seek a pro. Any special tools required??? I could not believe the old 40 still has 150 psi compression on both cylinders but its true. A oneowner jewell it is. It does not seem to b leaking from the prop shaft seal but farther in the housing. What do you think?? Thanks again from Rip!

possibly water pump base has been melted and the drive shaft seals are leaking. easy fix with nothing but a new pump kit that includes the lower base and hand tools. or a shift shaft seal leaking. the shift shaft busing will require a cheap little tool but its an easy fix as well.

You will need a spanner to remove the carrier nut and I would advise you to either buy or borrow a manual--Bob

rip rock<br /> also if the unit has seen saltwater duty dont try to unthread the carrier cover nut. drill it and crack it out:) but it may be best to remove the unit, pressure test it and see what is leaking. would be a killer chance to inspect/replace the pump assy :) .
