I need a new starter for the Mercruiser 165 hp (250cid) in my '73 Silverline. Does anyone know a source for these? I've looked online and only seem to find them for later year Mercruisers.

I checked on rockauto.com as the engine was essentially used in GM pickups of that era and I can buy one there but I'm pretty sure automotive starters and marine starters are not the same because of additional shielding for marine use and rockauto doesn't sell marine products any longer.

Thanks in advance.

On the marine version the field frame is welded together and there is an additional shield between the aluminum mount housing and the field frame, also marine starters are the heavy duty version and are slightly longer than the auto version and there is some type of sealing putty in the area where the engagement lever is.

Thanks. I was wondering how to tell if the starter is a marine version when I remove it and had not been replaced by an automotive one at some point.
