1973 Sea Ray SRV 220 Gas Problems

This is our first boat and we've had her for 3 years now. When we first brought her home, it took forever to fill the gas tank. During the last 6 months or so there has been heavy gas fumes in the cabin. The fumes were strongest in the galley area with no fumes in the engine compartment.

While having the starter replaced, carb rebuilt and sterndrive serviced, we had the local mechanic check into the fume problem. He seem to think it was the screen on the vent. I believe he cleaned the screen.

Now the tank fills much faster, but the fumes have gotten worse. Now, after a rain shower, when we turn on the bilge pump, about a cup of gas is mixed in with the bilge water and the carpet in the galley is damp with gas.

We are curious to find out what the problem is and how to fix it. I removed the wooden step leading from the galley and found a thick mass of foam. After poking around in it a bit, I found what seem to be the same same size and type gas hose that connects to the filler cap.

Can anyone tell us where the gas tank is located, where the filler and vent lines connect to the tank and how the system can be accessed / repaired.

Sounds like you have the same rig as me......
If you have the small step down like me, the fuel fill hose & vent hose are located under the top deck about a foot in from the edge.....
You will need to carefullycut the deck open the width of the step down & about a foot in......
You gas gauge sender is located there, too......
Of course you will need to empty the tank & let it air out before doing this......
The difficulty fueling is a plugged fuel vent.......
You will most likely need to replace both hoses......
Hope this helps........
Welcome to iboats, btw......:)
