74 115 Johnson, I was having some carb issues but it would start and fire on all cylinders. The next day I was replacing some fuel lines and started cleaning under the wires that run into the side of the engine, one of them was a large ground that I removed and re attached. I did this without unhooking the battery (Mistake). Ever since I did this I have no spark to any of the cylinders. I did pull the flywheel to look at the stator, one thing I notice is in the front and rear of the stator there appears to be something that leak?? Not sure what it is but it is hard to the touch. I will attach a couple of pictures to show what Im talking about. Is there anyway to test the stator and power pack?

Test procudure is outlined in service manual. You'll need a multimeter to check resistance of the coils.

That said, never good to see fluid leaking from a coil. Takes a fair amount of heat to melt the epoxy that coats them. A short will generate that type of heat.

I downloaded Seloc manual for $10 - much cheaper than paper copy.

Disconnect battery.
Ohmeter to high scale.
Disconnect yellow and yellow/grey stator leads at terminal block.
Black lead of meter to ground and red lead to each stator lead one at a time -should be infinite resistance, i.e. open circuit.
Any other reading indicates stator shorted to ground.

Ohmeter to low ohms scale.
Check lead to lead on disconnected stator leads; should be around 0.5 to 1 ohm if good.
If meter reads infinity, stator windings are open and should be replaced.

First, disconnect the rectifier, you probably cooked it. You can test it with an ohmmeter; see the Engine FAQ forum.

If the diode wiring in the rectifier fuses, battery voltage can reach the stator and damage it.

Re: 1974 115HP Johnson - No Spark

Is there any way to tell if the stator is a 6 amp or 12 amp? I see in the parts list they only show a 12 amp 1974, can I assume thats all they put in that year? The motor doen't have power tirm/tilt if that makes a difference. The only part number I can find is on the coils which is 510839 but I don't think that is for the stator.

Thanks to everybody for there help!!!

The Bombardier electronic parts lists show a basic 6 amp for the 115. The original stator was 581046-probably superceded many times since 1974. In later years there was usually a higher amp stator basic with those units that had power trim standard.

The 12 Amp system is listed in the "OB Accessories" section under "Electrical"

6 amp and ss = 581225, 581046, 763772

12 amp and ss = 581303, 582099, 581860

Re: 1974 115HP Johnson - No Spark

Well I got a new stator and change the rectifier which had a broken wire. I can start the motor but hooking a timing gun to the different cylinders spark plug wires it shows only one cylinder firing. I switch two of the coils around to see if the coils where bad but the same cylinder was the only one firing. At this point can I assume the power pack is bad? I read in other post it could be the key switch how would I go about checking to see which one it is?
