I'm rewiring a 1974 Merc 402 and have found most of what I need with the exception of the tilt stop switch. Part number is 58124A14 but the only one I can find is in England and will be over $100 to get it here. Does anyone know if other models of tilt stop switches can be used in place of the 58124A14. There are several out there with ending number A15, A19 etc. They are specified for other Mercury motors but look the same with the exception of the length of the wires.

Serial Number 3347777 A 1974 Mercury 402. It is original to a 1975 Boston Whaler Sport 13.

What's wrong with the switch? They seldom fail.

As with the rest of the wiring on the engine the wire insulation has crumbled and fallen off. I don't think I'll be able to splice on new wiring. Although I will try I'm hoping to find a reasonable backup if I can't spice on new wires.

Yup... I have seen the one in the UK and a few more with different "A" numbers A19, A8, A15 and so on. The all seem to have the same number on them as the one on my engine, 58124 and no "A" number following. Se the photo below. After a little more research I think when I put the new internal harness if I can't slice in new wires to the tilt stop switch I'll just bypass it. The function it serves, to stop the engine if it is tipped up, either manually or by striking something submerged, is not a necessity and if I can't put new wires on it, it will cost a lot of extra money to maintain it.

Don't bypass by connecting the two wires or the motor will never start. When the mercury switch is made, it ties ground to the ignition system to shut the motor off. If you can't splice new wire in, disconnect the wire on the ignition end and tape it up.
