First you make sure it isn't a bad spark plug. If the plugs are ok, you use a harmonic balancer puller to remove the flywheel and get in there to fix it. Probably dirty or worn out breaker points.

After you find the problem you make sure the shaft and flywheel tapers are clean and dry and use a torque wrench to tighten the flywheel nut to 40-45 foot pounds. Ignore the last step and you will probably ruin the motor.

The coils could also be shot. Once you have the flywheel off check to see that the coils aren't cracked, sweaty or discoloured. Here is a shot of some bad coils in a 1972 Johnson 6 hp.

the coils were toast. mine dont look anything like those creatures. how bad can the points look before they are bad. mine have what looks like they stuck together. think of a bunch of small pitts i tried sanding it with 1500 but seamed to run worse. how bad can points get.

For about $25+ you can buy an entire ignition tune-up kit (points and condensors) from your dealer or online. Don't fight with bad points just replace them.

Did you also clean the contacts after you dressed the points? I use a clean piece of lint free paper like brown paper bad, buisness card, etc and some carb cleaner, engine tuner, isopropyl alcohol, contact cleaner or any other clean drying alcohol based solvent.

i cleaned them with a alcohol base cleaning solvent for painting prep. I wasnt able to sand the points to where there wasnt any pitts. do they have to be perfectly flat without pitts on them. Does anyone have pictures of good clean points? the way that im adjusting them is just set the crank to the high spot on the point base and check with 0.020 . is that correct?

.020 is correct on your point gap and yes ,high point of the lobe on the crank, when it is opening the point set,,,,sounds like you need to replace your firing squad tho,,,coils ,points, cond,plugs/wires

why would i need to replace coils? just by doing points and condensers should get me almost perfect ignition system right. How does one test if coils are good?

If the coils are original, best chance they are, they will be cracked on the outer coating.

If they are, they will never function correctly. Read; intermittant issues.

Do it all and it will run another 50 years.

Wait a minute, didn't you just say they are toast? Maybe I'm misreading the slang?

That's what I thought, too.

The points should be convex not flat. You want them to be slightly rounded and to make contact in the center.

No need. They are cracked so they are bad.

Nope. Is everything "like" new or actually new. If the QD-19 has 40 year coils then they are bad, too. The QD has very few parts that are compatible with your motor.

You know what the problem is so why are you so hesitant to fix it? Would you put used spark plugs in your car and call it a tune-up?

I would squirt some oil in the 58 plug holes, let it sit a day or two and then check to be sure it's buggered or just really dry from 40 years of inactivity. It might be a good one. Aren't I being an optimist. Rick.
