Ok. After I replaced the water pump and cleaned out the cooling hoses and pee hole, took my 16' 77 sportcraft w/'74 65 HP 3 cyl. out to fish. Cranked and wouldn't start at the ramp. Jumped the battery and ran for about 15 minutes and then started to miss at high speed, got worse and worse, turned and headed home.
Got home and checked the battery. Battery pretty much dead. Got my Christmas present out, a 10AMP Black and Decker multi battery charger w/alternator tester built in and put it to good use. Brought battery back up to full charge after about 6 1/2 hours. Put battery back in boat, hooked it up, put the muffs on and fired her up. I used the alternator tester built in to the charger and at idle, alt failure was indicated. I shut off the motor and turned off the test. Fired it back up and increased the RPMs with cold start lever (about 14- 1750 RPM guessing) and retested it. It failed alternator test again.
Should I check the rectifier and stator only or is there something else that can keep the motor from charging the battery?
Any help you can give is appreciated.
