1st...Where is the water supposed to exit the engine from. I had the water muffs on and then I put the engine in a tub of water: I can't find water exiting the engine anywhere. I pulled the lower unit and found the impeller to be in good shape. The hole that I thought the water was supposed to exit from is in the lower unit below the vent screw, but with the lower unit off I could see the hole just went into a huge cavity...no water tube ran to it.

So where is the water supposed to come out at?
How do I check the pump with the lower unit out?
What else can cause water not to exit the engine?

Not sure what kind of motor you have. The water on a chrysler exits about 8 inches below the power head through a snout. When you have the lower unit off you can see a brass tube going to the power head. Hook your hose up to this and turn water on without motor running. If it is an older chrysler and does not have a thermostat water should be coming out this snout.

The impeller rides on the drive shaft and has a pin or key that goes into a hole half way drilled into the drive shaft. If that pin is not in the shaft and lined up with the slot on the impeller it will not turn. Also check the impeller. There is a brass or metal like hex nut that is like glued to the rubber impeller. Make sure this is sealed to the rubber all around. IF not the metal nut will spin and the rubber impeller will not. On your next post please add you motor model number horse power and make (Chrysler or Force)

I'm assuming that you have a Chrysler OB. On the top of the impeller housing there is an outlet with a grommet. That outlet goes to the water tube . The water tube goes up through the motor leg and into the powerhead. The tube should be in the motor leg. If it isn't, DO NOT attempt to start engine. I've found that the best way to install water tube is to remove motor leg. Then you can see exactly what your doing . You may need to fabricate a new water tube. Chrysler parts like that are hard to find.

The title to the post had the year and HP. It is a Chrylser outboard 75 hp 1973 model. I don't see a brass pin holding down the impeller, but the key and the center of the impeller are all in good shape.

The only snout I see has two holes and it is the the upper exhaust, I think. The exhaust comes out there when the outboard is in the water or something.

Can the impeller look good with the naked eye but really be bad?

I checked out my clymer and apologize. I figured the drive shafts were similar to my 45 hp. I have a hole for the impeller and your motor has a woodruf key that makes the impeller spin. I also see that your water pipe and configuration is different.
