1974 85HP Evinrude vs 1978 150HP Mercury - Opinions

Anything that I should watch out for going to a Mercury? Is this a Ford/Chevy conversation or is there more to it than that? Is the Mercury still 2 cycle? What kind of top end speed increase could I expect going from the 85 to 150 on a fiberglass deck boat? Thanks.

Both are "powerhead" rated. But, there is still a 65 HP difference.<br /><br />Pick the one in the best shape. Both are very "serviceable".

bazeven, that Merc will have quite a bit more zoom, then the OMC, due to the power increase of 76%. Both were good motors, with the Merc a bit more high performance for the displacement (100Cu In).

bazevan, what are you planning on doing with the 1974 85hp evinrude? is it still in good shape . are you planning on selling it? just asking because i may end up needing some parts for mine.

about 11 - 13 mph faster than the 85 Evinrude
