I have just was given a 1974 9.9 Johnston outboard. I put the motor in a tank and started it up. It ran ok for about 15 minutes and then just cut out. I noticed in the tank that there was oil now in the water and the engine was very hot. We pull the motor out of the tank and notice a grey oil coming out of the bottom of the unit. How does the cooling system work in this type of motor, I don't see a water discharge higher on the shaft like newer models . It does start fine but overheats. Just a beginner thanks for all your help.

rwm,

First off, manuals are available here.

http://www.outboardrepairs.com/manuals/

Mostr likely one of two problems exists.

1. The water pump is in need of service.

2. You have blockage in the system.

Sound like you need to replace the water pump for the overheat problem, as for the gray stuff coming out of the lower unit it sounds like the seals are gone (should also be replaced) pull the drain plug in the bottom and the fill hole on the side and see if the oil is gray, means you have water in there. Also check the housing for cracks, could have been stored with water in the lower unit and froze.
