I just bought a 1974 Chrysler 35hp 2 stroke electric start engine. It has been sitting for a few years so I just put some fuel/oil in the cylinders through the spark plug hole and it started right up. I connected the power straight to the starter for positive and negative was grounded to the engine. It ran for a few seconds then ran out of fuel and died. I did this 2 times and then attempted a third time and it wouldn't fire up. I checked and there was no spark. So I checked the point gap and cleaned the contacts and got new spark plugs. It will not fire up now at all. If you hit the starter and connect a grounded spark plug to the end of the spark plug wire every once in a while you will see a very blue/white strong spark. But it will not keep the spark. It is intermittent. This is driving me crazy. I see nothing grounding it out. All wires are in good condition and have no bare spots. PLEASE HELP!!!

Hello and welcome to Iboats. The positive lead from your battery should go to the postitive lead on the starter solinoid. There should be a jumper on the same point on the starter solinoid that goes to a circuit breaker. Then the opposite side of the circuit breaker goes to the terminal strip. Maybe verify that the circuit breaker is not blown.

I checked and the circuit breaker is getting power to the terminal strip 11.84v. However it goes no where from the terminal strip.I do not have the boat wiring harness attached yet. Do I need to jump the positive lead to another terminal while trying to start it?

Is this a battery ignition or a magneto ignition?

The power should go through the wire harness and is jumpered somewhere else via the key switch. Here is a photo of the electrical on my Chrysler 45HP. It is a 1967 but the color coding should be the same. I would get a clymor or a syloc manual They have good electrical diagrams and would help you a lot.<br />
