hello you out there,
well, i'm still trying to fix the same problem, namely motor starts easy on first try but dies in 30 to 70 seconds. can repeat this situation 4 or 5 times with motor running shorter or longer times but never more than 90 seconds.
so, per advice i have gotten carb rebuild kits from i boats(sierra # 18-7037) and from napa(same number) and had a boat repair guy tell me the same kit number, but none of the kits give me the right size air horn and to block gaskets. and worse, the float needle and seats are of such a size(longer) that you would have to bend the tab on the float to a 45 degree angle wrt the float to get the right float shutoff level.
i've tried just cleaning the carbs and when installed i get the same above problem.
during the say 60 seconds the motor is running, i've looked into the carb and can see that there is a gas puddle behind the throttle valve. puddle meaning maybe 1/16 inch deep at bottom of the throat.
i think that means that the engine is being flooded with gas, but when i open the throttle to the 50 to 100% open it doesn't keep the engine running much longer.
the seats in the carb were like a rubber plug with a hole in the middle that the needle would seal. the new seats are all metal.
the carb kits, all the same number 18-7037, have either metal needles or rubber tipped needles.
the three carbs are tillotson wb8d.
any ideas???
getting discouraged,IMG_0543.jpgIMG_0544.jpg

Most carbs only need cleaning. The kits they sell are usually wrong and the parts won't work.
Reuse the old.
If the motor only runs for 90 seconds then you need to pump it again. Then the fuel pump needs to be rebuilt or the floats are not set right.
You have a manual?
The rubber tip needles can swell with the wrong cleaner.I use WD and dry them and let them set for an hour before I re-install.Some older carbs have small o-rings in the bottom of the needle/seat and they swell when Ethanol is used.
Gas pooling is normal.Gas pouring out isin't.
Check the fuel pump and the flloat levels.J

Re: 1974 chrysler 70hp motorl 707hf dies in 60 seconds

jerryjerry05,
thank you for the help.
i have tried to squeeze the primer bulb to pump gas during the few seconds that the motor is running and it appeared to have no effect on how long the motor ran.
you say that gas pooling in the venturi behind the throttle valve is normal. i didn't know that. i thought it meant that the float level or gas level in the bowl was too high.
i'm going to try to grind down the too long needles from the new kits so i can set the floats with the tab not bent 45 degrees. then maybe try to setup a test for the carbs on my bench by using alcohol instead of gas and a tupperware bowl for the metal carb bowl and see if the liquid level is actually controlled by the float.
i'll let you all know what happens.
i can't believe that with all the p[osts i've read on iboats, that i don't see anyone else having this problem with their motor.
thanks again, vince
ps: it's snowing and cold here in colorado. must be nice in florida at this time of year.

Picture 029.jpgAbsolutly BEAUTIFUL here!!!
Tomorrow (Sunday)were going on our 2nd anual Toy Run.Should be a good ride. And not a hint of SNOW anywhere!!!! :)
I've found that trying to adjust the kits usually ends up bad.Try cleaning up the old and check the fuel pump.
I might have a carb I can take a pic of setting the float.J
