I expect the hose your talking about is the hose that powers the fuel pump. It operates on the vaccum/compression pulse of one crankcase chamber. If your seeing gook coming out you might be making that chamber is leaking causing a lean misfire (sneeze). Does this sound like your problem?

Sneezing indicates your going lean, which is to say you don't have enough fuel for the air for some reason.

If your crankcase leaks, fuel/air will get blown out the hole and just air will get sucked in.
Look for holes and fix em. (Like your leaky hose - replace it)

If your carburator is clogged with crud, it won't provide enough fuel.
Fix this by cleaning the carburator in carburator cleaner, blow it out with compressed air & rebuilding it with a rebuild kit.

If your fuel pump is crummy, it won't supply enough fuel to the carb.
Test this by pumping the primer bulb and seeing if it goes away. Fix it with a fuel pump kit.

A manual for your engine will take you through all these tasks step by step.
