Hello all i have a 1974 Evinrude 25 hp model 25452m
It has electric start hookup, i will be replacing the harness, to s simpler idea. so the motor does not have a MOB on it. i will be installing a push button to start. but the only thing i can think of is to take the two wires that go to the coils and put a pigtail on both of them i and wire it to the MOB one side of the switch. the other side would go to ground.
so if i do that wont the spark just backfeed into the other one on the pig tail?
so my question is what is the correct way ??
thanks Dale

PS : The motor has 125 comp both cyl
replaced all coils, condecers, points. under the flywheel only one driver magnito.
replced fuel pump, put in new waterpump, drained oil refiled. took carb apart and rebuilt. will give it a pull hopefully tonight.. will keep posted....

The 2 wires that go to the coils are connected to stop the motor .----Simple as that.

so i looked at my picture of my points system, the only black wire goes to the condencer, the other color is a blue color wire that runs down to the coils. attached is a picture of what i have, this picture is from the web. ignore the re marks. that was on the picture. so i dont understand what wires you are refering too.online.jpg

Simple. There are two blue wires, one has a white stripe, one to each of the two coils. Connecting those two wires together kills the spark and the motor quits running. The MOB switch does just that when the lanyard is yanked off.

The MOB switch is NOT connected to ground on this motor (but is on some other motors).

So if i take a pig tail from each one of the coils and connect them to the MOB SWITCH, the switch is normaly open, so they will not connect to each other. but when the MOB switch is pulled it will allow the MOB to change its state to Commonly closed, taking the two coils and putting them together. that will cause the motor to stop. will this cause any issues to the driver or the coils, in my mind they are fireing backinto each other.
thanks for all the help everyone.....

Why make a big deal.-----They made thousands of these motors.----Connecting the 2 wires going to the coils stops the motor !

Actually, the picture you posted is incorrect. It goes like this. (Disregard the charging part if you do not have it)

Thank you for replying the picture you poster is not for the evinrude 25. I also only have 1 driver under the flywheel. ,
I did follow the other suggestion about letting them fire to each other. It worked it kills the spark. Came home put in the MOB, push button start. Sprayed carb cleaner in carb it tried to fire but backfired. So I switched the wires , no more backfire but didn’t start. Got late and did not want to Lisa off neighbors. So after work tomorrow I will hook up the gas can and see and prey……

The 25 hp model has essentially the very same ignition set up as the 9.9 model shown !!.-----The picture above shows the battery charging windings ( optional item ) on these simple motors.

Yes I want to get the charging system for mine. There is no way I am pull starting this motor. So I always look for someone selling parts for it. I’ll come across it . Time

Lots of those left the factory with electric start.----A donor motor is the best way to go.

Dalejam, the picture you posted is incorrect, and can't work the way somebody has wired it there. Not only that, but the grounded terminal you red-circled would get ripped off by the flywheel magnets on the first revolution.

Your back-feed theory is also incorrect. It just doesn't work that way

the picture was from the web. it is not mine from my motor. it is the same style one driver 2 sets of points.
i did wire it the way i was told and it did work as stated. so it kills the spark when pulled, when not pulled it gets spark to the plugs.
the next thing is putting gas to it. then trying to start it.
thank you all for the first part of my quest of getting on the water safely.
Dale
